Books I Would Write If I Were a Public Intellectual
2011
This project is a series of book jackets. Shown wrapped around a volume or on the wall as a two-dimensional object, the jackets depict self-portraits of Naomi Miller as she recreates several photographs of Susan Sontag. An original title, description, laudatory quotes, and biography are inscripted on each jacket, casting Miller as a modern intellectual engaged in contemporary issues and the public eye. Miller explores her internal fantasies, her fascination with persona construction, Sontag’s role in photographic discourse, and contemplates the definition of these arbiters of public conversation and their role in the contemporary moment.
